I recently visited Cheekwood Botanical Garden and Art Museum in Nashville on a chilly and overcast Saturday morning. I was there to check out the beautiful Christmas trees and live reindeer that are part of their “Holiday at Cheekwood” event.

To me, Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year.  And what better way to combine the love of gardening and the holidays then by creating a naturally decorated Christmas tree.

Once this lovely genera makes it way to retail shelves, we know that Christmas is close. What’s next though? What is needed for it to remain healthy long after Santa has returned to the North Pole?

Christmas Cactus, also known as Schlumbergera or Zygocactus, is often referred to by its common name because it starts to perform and bloom during the holiday season.  These nostalgic plants are often passed down through families by propagation or mature plants.

Cyclamen come in a beautiful range of colors from bright pink to soft white and several colors in between. The foliage is dark green with beautiful heart-shaped patterns in either silver or white with some having gorgeous variegation. Like any plants, purchase those that have numerous buds rather than fully open flowers; resulting in more flowering while the plant is in your possession.
